Kenneth Mitchell, Flashpoint Interview

August 19th, 2008

Jericho fans in mourning for the show have a reason to smile again. For the second time this month, a former Jericho cast member is guest starring on the new CBS show Flashpoint! This week, Kenneth Mitchell appears as a wife-abusing cop taken hostage by an angry family member in the episode entitled “Asking for Flowers”. A bit of a departure from Eric Green, huh? Mitchell says he’s heard rumors of a Jericho film and he’d love to do it. Fingers crossed.

UGO: So for those who haven’t seen it yet, tell us a bit about Flashpoint.

KENNETH MITCHELL: It was a Canadian produced show at first, about a Toronto special unit. The pilot was successful and they brought it to CBS. It was during the writer’s strike and they were looking for some content that potentially might have to fill the airwaves. They took a liking to the show and picked it up, so now it’s kind of a co-production with Canada and America…story-wise, it’s about this Toronto unit…it’s pretty rare on American waves that you have a story that takes place actually in Canada. And coming from Canada myself I find that fascinating.

UGO: What’s your episode about? Who do you play?

KENNETH: So I play a wife abusing Pete. That’s my character. (laughs) I’m a cop. Right near the beginning of the show the audience finds out that I’ve been abusing my wife, and my sister-in-law is privy to this and she’s tired of it and wants to stop this from happening again. So basically she steals my gun…and holds me for ransom. She holds me hostage on my yacht, trying to get me to stop this. And she’s kind of confused. She’s dealing with whether or not to kill me or just threaten me. And then things take a bit of a turn when I eventually get the upper hand, and I get the weapon away from her. I kind of go into crazy, psycho abusive mode and seek revenge on her holding me hostage.

UGO: Have you ever played a character like this before? Someone this dark?

KENNETH: I did this film called Home of the Giants where I played a bit of a dark character. Nothing kind of abusive like that. It was kind of interesting. These characters are quite challenging. The other interesting thing about playing this character, is that I was drunk the whole time. That’s always kind of challenging to play. You can always overdo it and you really have to trust your director to keep you in check. Someone always told me, I think it was an acting coach, it’s really difficult to play drunk. Don’t act drunk. When they’re drunk, people often pretend not to be drunk…it’s something that kind of stuck in my mind while I was playing the character. And thankfully I had the director Clark Johnson (The Wire, The Sheild) on board, and he was great at kind of keeping me in check. And I think we found an interesting level of drunk throughout the episode. Going back to the original question, I guess Home of the Giants was probably a bit of a creepy character that I played. But this is definitely the creepiest of them all, so far.

UGO: Do you like playing heroes or villains? Do you have a preference?

KENNETH: Not really. (laughs) I guess, I’m not saying I’m a hero, but I feel like I’m your average guy, so when you’re playing the villain character, it’s fun to play something totally different…sometimes I have a lot more fun playing the villain.

UGO: Would you do a series again? Is that something you’re looking for?

KENNETH: Absolutely. I had such an amazing time on Jericho. It was a great family. I enjoyed going to work everyday. So I’m definitely open to doing another show.

UGO: We were just at Comic Con, and I heard people mention Jericho more than once. You’ve still got some pretty rabid fans out there.

KENNETH: (laughs) Yeah, I know. Things are still buzzing around. I’ve even heard rumors of a film and whatnot, but yeah, the fans are great.

UGO: A Jericho film? That would make the fans like me very happy.

KENNETH: Yeah, they’re just rumors at this point. You hear lots of things. At this point I can’t take anything to heart. I have to try and move on. But that’s something that I would jump on in a second because I love Jericho and I feel like there’s a lot more story to tell. And again, I love working with all those people.

UGO: What do you have in the works right now?

KENNETH: Well my voice is kind of groggy right now because I put in a long 14 hour day doing a mini-series called Meteor, which is kind of another disaster project. (laughs) You’ll probably get a kick out of this. I play a farmer, and the set of the farm is exactly the same as Stanley Richmond’s (Brad Beyer) farm. It was actually kind of trippy…some meteors come down and hit America, and cause havoc. And the whole thing is unfolding through this small town. It has very similar elements to Jericho, except this time I’m playing the farmer, saving my wife and my kids.

UGO: Do you know when that’s going to be released?

KENNETH: I don’t know. I’m guessing maybe sometime early next year or late this year, depending on how fast they can turn around all the special effects. It’s called Meteor: The Path of Destruction. There’s some really interesting people involved like Stacy Keach (American History X, Prison Break), Billy Campbell (The 4400, Once and Again), Jason Alexander and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future. It’s kind of a neat ensemble they put together…it felt good to get back into Jericho mode too. Like yesterday I was bloody and my face was all dirty and I was running around. I save people. It was kind of reminiscent of my Jericho days and it made me happy.

UGO: Did you have a favorite episode of Jericho?

KENNETH: Yeah. My first favorite episode was “Rouge River”. I just loved going off with Skeet (Ulrich)…kind of getting down and dirty, and all that kind of “action-y” stuff with the guns. Doing something redeeming and trying to get medicine for our father. I always love that stuff…for emotional reasons I really enjoyed working on the death of April. That kind of spun things with my character’s direction, with the whole capture. And I guess the last three episodes of the first season were dynamite. They were great, action packed, the death of the father, the whole war. I love working with that stuff. And any episodes with horses in it.

UGO: Really?

KENNETH: (laughs) I love riding the horses. There was this moment, I think it was Jake (Ulrich) and I, where we were riding horses. We were chasing after that truck, and gosh, we were going so fast! I mean, here we are, riding these horses right behind this truck. They probably should have had stunt doubles doing this day, but Skeet and I were doing it. We were looking over at each other, pretty much with a “holy sh*t” face. (laughs) But then, you know, a big grin and a smile. We were playing cowboys and indians, like we were kids. I can’t believe I get paid to do this sometimes. It’s a lot of fun. It’s great! For Flashpoint, it was great to get back to Toronto. That’s where I’m from. And see my folks. It’s one of those moments where you’re like, it’s a great business. I’m having a lot of fun. I get paid to do this [thing] where I get to travel, meet people and hang out with my family. To go to work and get to play some creepy, interesting characters.

UGO: And play drunk.

KENNETH: (laughs) And play drunk…I’m really proud of what they were able to produce on the Canadian side. It’s one of the best shows they’ve ever done.

Ab da an ist die Gemeinde komplett von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten: Kein Strom, kein Wasser, keine Vorräte. From then on, the town is completely cut off the outside world: no electricity, no water, no supplies. Die Überlebenden wissen zunächst weder was passiert ist und wie schlimm das Ausmaß ist, noch wie es weiter geht. The survivors initially not know what happened and how bad the scale, nor how to continue.

Jake Green ( Skeet Ulrich ) kehrt nach fünf Jahren in seine Heimatstadt ” Jericho ” zurück. Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) returns after five years in his home town of Jericho “. Die Überlebenden haben Fragen über Fragen, aber keine Antworten: War die Explosion ein Terroranschlag und wenn ja von wem? The survivors have some questions about questions but no answers: Was the explosion a terrorist attack and if so by whom? Sind noch weitere Städte außer Denver betroffen? Are other cities except Denver? Wieso kommt keine Hilfe? Why is no help? Mit wem kommuniziert Hawkins und was weiß er über die Anschläge? With whom Hawkins communicates and what he knows about the attacks? Die Kleinstadt in Kansas steht vor schwierigen Aufgaben und Entscheidungen, die sie nur lösen können, wenn sie zusammenarbeiten. The small town in Kansas is facing difficult tasks and decisions that only they can solve, if they work.

The image

Even if we initially only a full-frame version existed in the commercially available box offers a 16:9 widescreen image in European PAL standard and is color-balanced with excellent detail and sharpness. So macht das Ansehen Spaß. So the reputation of fun. Eine junge Serie darf einfach nicht anders auf DVD gepresst werden. A young series may simply not be pressed on DVD. Ohne wahrnehmbares Bildrauschen und ohne nennenswerte Kompressionsartefakte überzeugt das Bild durch einen angenehmen Kontrast. Without perceptible noise and without significant compression artifacts convinced the picture by a pleasant contrast.

Der Ton The sound

Die DVDs bieten eine englische Tonspur in Dolby Digital 5.1 und jeweils deutschen, französischen, italienischen und spanischen Ton in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround. The DVDs offer an English soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 and the German, French, Italian and Spanish sound in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround. Untertitel werden in Deutsch, Englisch, Dänisch, Finnisch, Französisch, Holländisch, Italienisch, Norwegisch, Schwedisch und Spanisch angeboten. Subtitles are in German, English, Danish, Finnish, French, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish and Spanish.

Die englische 5.1-Spur überzeugt durch einen ansprechenden Raumklang, der an vielen Passagen auch angenehme Bässe hervorbringt. The English 5.1 track with a convincing surround sound appealing, in many passages also pleasant bass produces. Deutlich abgegrenzt erklingt die Sprache aus dem Center, wodurch die Verständlichkeit steigt. Clearly delineated hear the language from the center, thus increasing understanding. Die hinteren Boxen sind ständig gefordert, um die Atmosphäre akustisch zu untermalen. The rear speakers are constantly required to accompany acoustic atmosphere.

The German Dolby Digital 2.0 surround sound - for what he is - pleasantly, but no real competition to Dolby Digital 5.1.

Leider hat es sich wohl für eine derart kurzlebige Serie nicht gelohnt, eine deutsche 5.1-Spur zu produzieren. Unfortunately, it is probably for such a short series is not worth it, a German 5.1 track to produce.

Man vermisst gerade im Vergleich mit der englischen Spur den Raumklang, der einen einhüllt und durch die Szenen trägt. One missing, especially in comparison with the English track the surround with a einhüllt and by the scenes.

‘Jericho’ Star Meets ‘The Prisoner’

August 1st, 2008

Former Jericho star Lennie James is taking up residence in a new village.

James, who played Robert Hawkins on CBS’ cult series, has signed on to AMC’s remake of the classic 1960s show “The Prisoner.” He’ll play Number 147, a resident of the mysterious Village where a former secret agent, now known as Number 6 ( Jim Caviezel), finds himself imprisoned.

Three other actors have also joined the series, AMC says. Ruth Wilson, a Golden Globe nominee this year for a “Masterpiece Theatre” production of “Jane Eyre,” Hayley Atwell (”Mansfield Park,” ” Brideshead Revisited”) and Jamie Campbell-Bower (”Sweeney Todd”) will play other residents of the Village.

Ian McKellen (”The Lord of the Rings,” “Gods and Monsters”) was previously cast as Number 2, the apparent head of the Village and Number 6’s primary antagonist.

AMC is producing “The Prisoner” with British broadcaster ITV and Granada International, with Bill Gallagher attached to write. The six-hour miniseries is scheduled to air sometime next year.

In addition to “Jericho,” James’ credits include “The State Within,” “Snatch” and “24 Hour Party People.”

Skeet Ulrich

July 12th, 2008

Full Name: Skeet Ulrich

Birthday: January 20, 1970

Birthplace: Lynchburg, Virginia

Interesting facts:
He had open heart surgery when he was 10 years old.
Nephew of NASCAR driver, Ricky Rudd

Biography:

A strikingly handsome and intense leading man, Skeet Ulrich’s natural talent and depth of character quickly put him on the map of young actors to watch. With chiseled cheekbones and an ardent stare, Ulrich made his mark early on as crazed teen killer Billy Loomis in Wes Craven’s “Scream” (1996) and as bank robber Joe Newton in “The Newton Boys” (1998). A former stage actor and member of David Mamet’s Atlantic Theater Company, Ulrich went on to bring depth and acuity to his performances on screen. Taking on the medium of television in 2006, Ulrich landed a starring role in the CBS drama “Jericho.”

Born Bryan Ray Trout on January 20, 1970 in Lynchburg, Virginia, Ulrich was raised in Concord, North Carolina. At age 10 he underwent open-heart surgery to repair a congenital defect. Earning the childhood nickname “Skeeter” from a Little League coach for being small and quick, Ulrich later shortened his name to Skeet and adopted his step-father’s (DK Ulrich) surname.

He attended Northwest Cabarrus High School and went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he studied marine biology. While working as an extra in the films “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989) and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (1990) during college, Ulrich developed an interest in acting. Switching majors, he soon transferred to New York University to study drama, where he was asked to join David Mamet’s Atlantic Theater Company. Performing in a number of off-Broadway plays with the company, including Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” and Craig Lucas’ “Reckless,” Ulrich began to build a solid resume.

Appearing in his first television role of a teen whose relationship with a girl from another cultural background causes problems for their families in the 1994 ABC After-School Special “Same Difference,” doors began to open up for Ulrich. Landing a string of parts in feature films, all of which opened within a week of each other in 1996, Ulrich quickly became one of Hollywood’s new faces to watch.

Turning in a number of performances, Ulrich portrayed Winona Rider’s boyfriend in the drama
Boys” (1996), appeared as death row inmate Sharon Stone’s brother in “Last Dance” (1996), and as a hostage in Kevin Spacey’s “Albino
Alligator” (1996). That same year, Ulrich became a familiar face to younger audiences – particularly a favorite of the female sect – in the teen witchcraft flick “The Craft” (1996), as a smart-mouthed football player whose girlfriend becomes involved in witchcraft and, more importantly, as Neve Campbell’s murderous boyfriend Billy Loomis in Wes Craven’s horror-genre revival flick, “Scream” (1996). Exhibiting a natural talent on camera, Ulrich went on to land roles in Paul Schrader’s “Touch” (1997) and James L. Brooks’ Oscar-nominated, “As Good As It Gets” (1997), though a number of his scenes in the latter film were eventually cut. The film roles kept coming, with Ulrich portraying real-life bank robber Joe Newton opposite Ethan Hawke and Matthew McConaughey in Richard Linklater’s “The Newton Boys” (1998), starring in the thriller “Chill Factor” (1999) opposite Cuba Gooding Jr., and working with award-winning director Ang Lee in the civil war-era drama, “Ride with the Devil” (1999). One year later, Ulrich starred in “Takedown” (2000), playing the leading role as Kevin Mitnick, an infamous hacker in the mid 1990’s.

Starring in his first series television role in 2003, Ulrich portrayed Paul Callan, an investigator of modern miracles, in the series “Miracles” (ABC, 2003). Though the series revolved around an intriguing premise, it was cancelled after only 13 episodes. To this day the series maintains a large fan base. Ulrich went on to star in the television movie “The Magic of Ordinary Days” (2005) opposite Kerri Russell and in the highly touted ensemble TNT mini-series, “Into the West” (2005). Returning to series television in 2006, Ulrich landed the lead role on the CBS series “Jericho,” portraying a man who returns to his hometown in Kansas just before it becomes isolated due to a mysterious explosion.

Skeet Quotes:

“I think I’m extremely vulnerable and that in some ways I seek out rejection. Never feeling like you’re getting that pat on the back from dad is probably at the heart of that. I’m working through it, which is good. As an actor, I think that you want to keep your demons to some extent, but you also have to exorcise them so you can use them instead of them using you.”

“Our first kissing scene (with Jewel Kilcher), I was eating onions in front of her right before. Just to let her know it’s all play.”

“I didn’t even go to my prom… I didn’t have one date in high school.”

“As a kid I used to pretend I was like John Denver, of all people, and play the guitar and sing, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads.’”

“I remember doing Ang Lee’s movie (”Ride with the Devil“) and people would come to the set and do interviews. And I told people I would do six more movies, and that would be it. I thought that might be the case. I had a leaning toward doing that and building furniture. And I bought a farm in Virginia and was living on it at that time.” “Then I took almost two years off when the kids were born. And I missed it so bad. I had no idea I would. There was just a void. I was getting so bottled up. I didn’t have that form of expression that eased it a little bit for me…”

“I was away from the business for close to two years, and I sort of felt it all again. You know, why I originally got interested in it — basically I am not a great communicator in life in terms of what’s going on in my head and how I feel about things. So it’s kind of a way, through metaphor, to say those things. It’s what drew me to it — other people’s voices saying what I wish I could say.”

“I watch very little TV - Spongebob Squarepants, mostly!”

On Miracles: “All you have to do is step outside and it’s hard to deny that there’s a God. So it hasn’t really changed any of my views on religion.”

On Jericho: “I really loved the premise.”Who do we become when someone takes everything away? Who decides what is law and order in a new world?”

“They grow up so fast, you just want to eat up every moment with them.”

“I’ve always been a wanderlust, but now I love being at home.”

“Acting is a perfect job for me - fun challenging and paid well with lots of time off in between. I just love it.”

Quotes by people who have worked with Skeet:

“He is always happy. He is so awesome. He is so mellow. He’s great. He loves what he does. He respects everyone and their job. He’s the right guy to lead a show with this big of a cast and this many people working on it. He is a real leader. On television shows, especially ensembles, there is usually a leader and the best compliment I can give someone is that it is like leading an ensemble theatre company. That’s what Skeet’s like. He’s like a captain of our team.” - Sprague Grayden

“He is always willing to give the other person their moment to shine.” - Brad Beyer

“He is a phenomenal presence, he is a kind gentleman, he is not bad to look at.” - Alicia Coppola

“Skeet is a diva, he is throwing fits all the time, I am sure you could tell when you interviewed him…” - Pamela Reed, joking. :)

“Besides the fact that I think Skeet is one of the best actors I have ever worked with, he’s just a great, great guy and he is really good to work with…. because he is right over there (laughing)…is that good… oh he is very handsome and tall.” - Michael Gaston

“Skeet’s amazing with his kids. He’s got twins, a boy and a girl, and he’s the best father figure I’ve seen in action. He’s incredibly sensitive and in control. To me, that’s really sexy.” - Ashley Scott

“I think it’s because I’m not good-looking enough to be the guy who gets all the girls. Instead, I’m the guy who gets to kill them. I’m not crying, like “Hey, look, I’m the ugly guy.” I really hate it when actors do that. But l ain’t no Skeet Ulrich.” - Matthew Lillard
“Matt Reeves said…’what you’re looking for is a movie star. You want someone that visually, even if you can’t hear them, people want to spend time with.’ I remember when Skeet came in and Matt was looking at him through a video camera and Matt was so impressed the way he [Skeet] was able to exude soulfulness and a sense of emotion and intelligence without speaking and he [Matt] said, ‘this is a guy we should get’. Matt’s instinct was a thousand percent correct. - Richard Hatem, producer, writer, creator of “Miracles” (on casting Skeet for Paul Callan)
“I remember watching Skeet who obviously connected with this scene very deeply, because his struggle for life is very vivid and I just remember shooting this scene over and over again and he’s lying in that glass and he never said anything. He just kept suffering and I just remember thinking, well, whatever his experience has been it’s connected to this because he did it so convincingly and so wonderfully and we just kept shooting and shooting….” - Matt Reeves, discussing the healing scene with Tommy in the pilot of “Miracles.”
“Skeet, I thought, was terrific in the series. He’s really good at listening to people which is a great part of acting” - David Greenwalt, executive producer and writer of “Miracles.”
“[Skeet had] a very good sense of the character and what was needed at any given moment. I don’t think there was ever a time I saw Skeet do a scene that I felt that it was going in the wrong direction. He seemed to understand exactly where to take each scene and how to take stuff that probably wasn’t clear on the page [and make it] incredibly emotionally clear — and that is the definition of a good actor” - Richard Hatem

Watch Jericho TV Show Online

June 28th, 2008

One of the many 24-style series of the 2006-2007 season, wherein crucial plot points were revealed with exasperating coyness on a weekly serialized basis, and in which every single solitary character seemed to have something to hide, Jericho TV Show made its CBS debut with one of the most startling openers in TV history. As prodigal son Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) returned to his hometown of Jericho, KS, after an unexplained five-year absence, he spotted what seemed to be a nuclear mushroom cloud blooming on the horizon, hundreds and hundreds of miles away.

Jericho-tv-01

At first glance, it looked as though the super-powers were at war, but it would later be revealed that the attack was the work of terrorists — though how many terrorists, no one knew. Whatever the case, Jericho was completely cut off from the rest of the world, and no one had any idea what fate held in store for them: another bomb, perhaps; or starvation; or slow death from radiation? Jake’s father Johnston Green (Gerald McRaney), the mayor of Jericho, valiantly tried to keep the community together and to avert wholesale panic, endeavoring to maintain radio contact with the rest of the country and the world, and organizing searching parties to glean new information about the apparent nuclear holocaust. Meanwhile, Jake was uncomfortably reunited with two former lovers: Emily Sullivan (Ashley Scott), now engaged to another man, and local schoolteacher Heather Lisinski (Sprague Grayden). Weaving in and out of the story was a newcomer to Jericho, the enigmatic Mr. Hawkins (Lennie James), who claimed to be a cop from St. Louis, and who somewhat suspiciously was a veritable fountain of information about nuclear fallout and post-apocalyptic survival techniques. Jericho began weaving its multitude of tangled plot webs on September 20, 2006.

Is Jericho the Show That Wouldn’t Die?

June 24th, 2008

Taking a cue from rival net NBC, CBS may be seeking a cost-sharing partnership to save a fan fave.

Apocalyptic drama Jericho may once again be resurrected, this time by means of a possible deal between CBS and cable provider Comcast. The deal may be structured similarly to one between NBC and DirectTV, which gave the sat TV provider first run rights to Friday Night Lights in exchange for splitting the show’s production costs with NBC.

A steady decline in ratings notwithstanding, Jericho has a dedicated following. Fans of the show have once already pulled Jericho back from the brink. CBS, it seems, may once again be ready to favor the faithful who just won’t let Jericho go gently into that good night. If this show manages to crawl out of the crypt for a second time, I may actually have to watch.

Crazy Jericho Fans Pestering Innocent Cable Viewers With Senseless Ads

June 16th, 2008

It’s been two months since CBS nuked its “Jericho” drama, for the second time. But that’s not stopping its small, persistent fan base from spending lots of time on “Save Jericho” blogs and message boards, and from dashing off letters to anyone they think might listen.

Also: Pestering people who have nothing to do with the show at all. A group calling itself “Jericho Rangers” has produced a TV ad imploring the show’s fans to help it save the show, though it’s not clear how they’re meant to do that. But the group did spend $6,314.88 airing the spot 200 times on Time Warner Cable (TWC) systems in LA.

There aren’t enough fans to sustain the show on broadcast TV, and all but the craziest fans understand this. Their slightly more realistic hope: That CBS will engineer a deal to bring it back in some other lower-cost form, on cable. Or maybe even online. NBC forged a deal with DirecTV to keep “Friday Night Lights” on the air. Why couldn’t CBS ink a deal with, say, the Sci Fi Channel?

Well, we suppose it could, and that might make sense if CBS owned a bunch of cable channels with relatively narrow audience bases. But it doesn’t: It’s a broadcast network, with an emphasis on broad.

So while the network won’t come out and say it, we’re not holding much hope for Jericho, and we advise its fans to invest their energy in a new show. Or maybe read a book. And if they want to, they can take solace in knowing that they’re not alone: CBS has also cancelled Moonlight, another show with lots of online fans but thin ratings. But we haven’t seen any ads from that show’s fans.
